The reclining nude with fabric over her arms is depicted with soft light colors and casual brushwork. “Nacre” comes from the French nacre, meaning pearly luster. It probably reflects the impression the artist received from the model. It was made during Kinoshita Takanori’s second stay in Paris and, in an indication of his confidence in the work, he exhibited it at Salon d'Automne, an important venue for introducing avant-garde art movements of the 20th century. After returning to Japan, he focused his attention on the motifs of stylish city women and ballet dancers. In this work we can discern his early interest in exploring the human form, which became the basis for those later works.
