Having gone through a period of rapid economic development known as the Roaring Twenties, the United States saw major changes in society and daily life. In this photograph, the country’s economic success is captured in a glittering Manhattan night. The exposure was likely made using only the light from the buildings themselves. One more thing that catches the eye is the way the image conveys a sense of the buildings’ three-dimensional shapes. Abbott had studied sculpture before becoming a photographer, and that may explain why this work seems to suggest the city is a model to assemble and dismantle. Abbott’s photographs of New York City taken from various angles were published in her book Changing New York.
