Dr. Lakra collects vintage printed matter relating to places and countries of interest at second-hand bookstores, flea markets, and online shops. Adding in his own drawings, cutting them out, and pasting them together, he generates the materials with which he makes his art. During his stay in Japan, he frequented the second-hand bookstore district in Jimbocho, Tokyo, collecting old magazines and other printed materials. For this work, he started with Suzuki Harunobu’s ukiyo-e woodblock print (believed to be a reproduction) of popular Edo Period (1603–1868) tea house maid Kasamori Osen, and then pasted on faces and hands from other prints. By also drawing an exotic-looking monster in the smoke that rises from her pipe, he seems to be trying to breathe new life into the well-established ukiyo-e format.
