The smooth, undulating surface of this piece has been polished to a deep, glossy black. As you gaze at it, you might feel like you are being drawn into rippling water. As you move, you might notice the reflected scenery morphs into ever-changing patterns. Artist Mizuki Rui produces not only fine art but music too, and his creative output reveals deep connections with underground culture. The physical sensations of riding a skateboard, or of DJing a set that brings a crowd together also seem to inform his work. His technique of layering black lacquer over reinforced fiber plastic, a material easily molded into various shapes, conveys his flexible approach to materials. This work was created for the museum’s exhibition “Views of Water” (2007).
