This photograph shows Shoshone Falls in the state of Idaho, U.S.A. This was the era of the Wild West, and Timothy O’Sullivan was participating in one of the four major government surveys of the region’s geology and natural resources. The size of the man at the bottom left conveys the scale and majesty of the waterfall and valley. As this shot shows, O’Sullivan excelled at depicting vast natural terrain within a single frame. His ability to also capture the overwhelming force of nature exerted a significant influence on later generations of American landscape photographers.
