Luxembourg-born Edward Steichen was one of the most prominent photographers in the United States in the first half of the 20th century, and he left behind dozens of photographic portraits of well-known people. One of his most famous portraits is this one of Gloria Swanson, a successful actress of the day. The two motifs of black lace embroidery and the actress’ gaze at the viewer are beautifully integrated in a work that is both portrait and fashion photograph. Steichen recalls the final hours of the long shoot: "At the end of the session, I took a piece of black lace veil and hung it in front of her face. She recognized the idea at once. Her eyes dilated, and her look was that of a leopardess lurking behind leafy shrubbery, watching her prey."
