Degree Zero - Yokohama is a series that was exhibited for the first time in 2003 when the Yokohama Museum of Art held a solo exhibition for Nakahira Takuma. All of the works in the series are vertical, and they show scenery, animals and plants captured using a telephoto lens. Nakahira disliked photographing things that overtly conveyed a personal emotion or evoked the particular circumstances of the time of shooting, and instead wanted his photographic subjects to be tightly aligned with their actual meanings, as you might find in illustrations in an encyclopedia. As a result, the photographs are particularly realistic, and yet at the same time possess a power and clarity. The series title, Degree Zero - Yokohama, was chosen because Nakahira started photography for the second time in his career in Yokohama, after he fell sick and moved there in 1977.
