This is one of two paintings made on the windows of the former Ryugu Bijutsu Ryokan (Ryugu Art Inn) in Hinodecho, Yokohama. The building, which had long before fallen into ruin, was revitalized in 2010 as a cultural center with a café and gallery by the NPO Koganecho Area Management Center and L PACK., an artist unit. However, after a year and a half of activity, it was decided that the building would be demolished as part of a redevelopment of the surrounding area. The two paintings were made for the building’s final exhibition, and they continue to convey its legacy today. Yasuda Yu initially specialized in landscapes featuring people and trees, but he later shifted to abstract painting. Unusually for the artist, these works were painted directly on glass, hinting at a subsequent evolution of his style toward emphasizing the blurring and smudging of paint.
