This work consists of six paintings depicting black circles on white canvases. The cryptic title is an abbreviation of "Circle on Square: Black Circle on White Square." In each painting, the circles are arranged differently in relation to their backgrounds. While the compositions of a black circle on a white background are simple, viewers may find themselves seeing in them a national flag or another famous work of art. At the time this work was made, "self-imitation" was a common theme in Nakahara Kodai’s art. This work itself was a kind of self-imitation, based on an unrealized plan for a solo exhibition he had developed some 20 years earlier.
