This work depicts the kind of port with ships berthing that was one of Tanaka Nobuyuki’s favorite motifs. And yet in the foreground oddly shaped buildings, a dinosaur and Ferris wheel are also visible. This is in fact the venue for the Yokohama Exotic Showcase ‘89 that was held in 1989 in Yokohama’s Minatomirai district. Various pavilions were assembled under the theme of “Space and Children,” and they are depicted here using the pointillism technique the artist learned from his teacher Kokuryo Tsunero. Curiously, no visitors can be seen in the picture. In addition, as everything is reduced to small dots, the image lacks any sense of movement and appears static. A world of things frozen in a people-less landscape: this is the port scene captured by Tanaka.
