People in white coats and work clothes hold their hands up against outdoor sculptures. Are these crisply lit photographs a record of a theatrical performance? What could these people be doing? For Christian Jankowski, who was born and raised in Germany, which was divided during the Cold War (1947-1989), the public art of squares, parks, and other public spaces are reflections of the state of society. In Japan, however, Jankowski felt that the public sculptures seemed stiff and unrelatable. With an eye to making our relationship with society softer and more friendly, he invited masseurs to visit some of Yokohama’s public sculptures and give them a massage.
