Three plovers rest their wings on a sand dune by a beach. In the background, clouds drift leisurely in the sky, and a calm sea stretches out to the horizon. The painting captures subtle undulations and shadows in the sand, perhaps created by the wind, along with subtle changes in the sand’s texture as it catches the light gently filtering through the clouds. Small stones in red, orange, and green shine like jewels. Exploring a wide range of themes, including historical paintings, narrative scenes, and landscapes, Nakamura Gakuryo consistently grounded his work in his observation of nature, close study of classical paintings, and faithful sketching. This painting is representative of his work in the 1930s—it captures the vitality of his subject with a clean palette and simple composition.
