In a desert-like environment, debris reminiscent of marine fossils and ancient relics are illuminated by strong light that casts dark shadows across the ground. When Yves Tanguy was young, he spent his summers in Brittany, in the westernmost part of France, where there are megalithic ruins dating from the Stone Age. Later in Paris he was inspired by the works of De Chirico to take up painting on his own, drawing for inspiration on the landscapes of Brittany that were still etched in his memory. He had also sailed to Africa at the age of 18, and again at the age of 30, and the African desert served as a reference point for creating ambiguous horizon-less spaces. In this painting, the piles of debris resemble living creatures, which emanate a mysterious aura.
