This is a portrait of American photographer Alfred Stieglitz. Reclining on a sofa while cleaning a favorite pair of glasses, Stieglitz is clearly in a relaxed state of mind. It is a shot that could only have been taken by Henri Cartier-Bresson, a master of the snapshot, in which a subject is caught in a moment of natural movement, rather than in a pose or in front of a set. Incidentally, Stieglitz is himself considered one of the most important figures in American art. Not only did he establish modern photographic expression as a photographer, but he also left his mark as an editor, gallerist, collector, and patron. This photograph was taken in the year of his death.
