Coney Island is a resort area in the southernmost part of New York City. The beach, which stretches from the coastal road to the sea on the right, is documented along with the masses of people visiting it. It’s a scene that symbolizes the optimistic mood of the United States after its victory in World War II.
The photographer, Andreas Feininger, was the son of renowned painter Lionel Feininger. He studied architecture and even worked as an architect, but in the 1930s he turned to photography. His photographs, the main motif of which are geometric and dynamic scenes composed of accumulated artifacts, clearly reflect his architect’s training and disposition. The main subject of this photograph is the crowd, but even it seems to be treated as one of the photographer’s observed artifacts.
