Marcel Duchamp has had a profound influence on art since the 20th century. Leaning against a wall and blowing calmly into his pipe, he exudes the air of a great artist. Photographer Irving Penn excelled at artist portraits. This is one of his most famous so-called "corner portraits.” The sharply angled corner behind Duchamp was installed specially for the series. Penn placed his subjects in the corner and then observed how they behaved. Some enjoyed posing, while others became claustrophobic and nervous. And thus the individual personalities were revealed in front of this artificial and inorganic setting.
