You can sense the picture was made quite quickly. At the time, the artist, Kimura Shohachi, was a member of his friend Kishida Ryusei’s Sodosha (Plants and Earth Society). As the name suggests, the members made paintings of plants and earth that tended to look quite similar. But, isn’t art about originality, you ask? Not for this group, who thought similarity with close friends was evidence of affection. It turns out there are lots of ways to think about art.
