The sight documented here is so horrifying it makes you want to avert your eyes. The location is Vietnam, and the corpse of a Viet Cong soldier is being dragged behind an American armored personnel carrier. How can humans be so cruel? This photograph records the psychology and violence of people in war. Sawada Kyoichi covered the front lines of the Vietnam War while working for an American news agency. However, in this photograph there is no suggestion that he was seeking to justify the actions of the United States. As a war photographer, he did take sympathetic photos of American soldiers. And yet he also adopted a stance of conveying the situation on the ground without taking sides.
