Children blowing soap bubbles on the porch on a Sunday afternoon. A neighbor’s cat that has wandered over to play. A snowman in the garden... Focusing on daily life and trying to capture casual moments is the best way to get into photography. Hoping to prompt people to incorporate cameras into their lives, Suzuki Hachiro got involved in the founding and editing of photography magazines before World War II. In the 1930s, when these photographs were taken, modern European photography was just being introduced to Japan via magazines, and there was a lively discourse about the potential of photographic expression and the role of photographers in society. Within this debate, Suzuki questioned the idea that art could be "detached from daily life," and spent three years photographing in his garden, eventually publishing a book that included these photographs.
