With waves painted on black lace, the picture appears to show a seascape. And yet neither the lace nor the veins in the leaf have been “painted” by the artist at all. They were made by placing actual lace and a leaf on a copper plate coated with a soft ground, and passing it through a press to transfer the ridges onto the plate. In other words, the artist has merely added wave- and constellation-like lines onto an image made from the natural uneven surface of his material. The organic image of the leaf is overlaid with fine dots and lines that make you feel like you are peering through a microscope, and it creates a mystical space that reveals life itself.
