Denshindo was an art school established by Ikegami Shuho in Ueno, Tokyo. Shuho trained many artists there. These paintings mostly depict seasonal gifts brought to the school by Shuho’s guests. In addition to seasonal fruits, vegetables, seafood, forest game, and famous confections from different countries, there are also flowers from the school’s garden. In total, there are six volumes with more than 200 drawings created over 29 years. In his youth, Shuho had trained in classical Oriental painting but later became influenced by the Western paintings entering Japan at the time and started to devote himself to sketching nature precisely as he saw it. Although he is known for his dense and flamboyant bird-and-flower paintings, the freshness of his work is the result of his respectful attention to the details of nature’s bounty. (UCHIYAMA Junko)
