This photograph is part of a series. Others in the series show the woman still dressed lying on the printing press, or naked and applying ink to her arms. This work, in which a man is seen wiping ink from her hand, presumably depicts a scene in which the man has finished making a work of art using the woman. In European art, the naked woman or muse has long been considered a goddess-like figure capable of inspiring and guiding male artists. But note that here both of the models—Louis Marcoussis, the man, and Meret Oppenheim, the woman—are, in fact, artists. In other words, this woman is not a tool for a man’s creativity at all, but an artist who creates her own work in her own right.
