Portrait (Carolin Kewer) 

This work shows a person’s face photographed from the front. The face has been enlarged so much that it is more than two meters in height. Thomas Ruff is a German-born artist who pushes the boundaries of photographic expression. This is one of a series of portraits of people he knows personally, but because their facial expressions are neutral, his relationship with them is not readily apparent. So, although the subject is identified by name and their face is shown in detail, the viewer has no knowledge of who they actually are. The series is built on that peculiar sense of anonymity created by this kind of photograph. But what if we were to compare the faces from different photos? Perhaps the differences might reveal something about their personalities.
