Hans Bellmer didn’t actually break his dolls to create his photographic works. The artist recomposed the dolls’ parts in various unnatural positions and then photographed them. The dolls had special movable joints and were made with the help of his brother, who was an engineer. In this photo, a chair is placed in front of partially peeling floral wallpaper with an armless doll propped up against it. The image is composed looking up at the thighs, with the lens focused on the round, puffy belly. The parts above and below the belly can be twisted. A closer look at the chest and breasts reveals they are made with the same parts as the rounded pieces in the lower body and groin. A girl’s mouth can be seen between the breasts, close to the genitals. This doll by Bellmer is characterized by the presence of two lower halves of a body connected to one belly.
