Cars pass by leaving trails of exhaust smoke. The head of man crosses in front of the camera. Several men work high up on the wall of a building in the center. It’s like everything visible is in the middle of some action. Astor Place is a street in Manhattan, New York, which was once the center of the music industry and show business. The tall building in the background, home of sheet music publisher Carl Fischer Music, symbolizes this. While this photograph might appear ordinary at first glance, it manages to capture a city whose vitality inspires people with its buildings that transform as frequently as signboards. The Swiss-born Robert Frank arrived in America in 1947 and this photograph was taken two years later.
