Gold, silver, red, white, black. The motif of this work is blooming red and white plums. Fujita Kyohei aimed to express a traditional Japanese aesthetic in his chosen medium of glass. From 1970 onwards he produced his Kazaribako (decorative box) series using the technique of winding colored glass and gold and platinum leaf around a block of molten glass that he would then blow into. The series, which has much in common with the aesthetic of the Rinpa School of painting, with luxurious decoration and modern design, quickly gained popularity. The works became well known overseas as “dream boxes” after the artist was asked what one should keep in them and he responded, “Put your dreams in them.”
