A woman looks ahead with a tense expression. It could be a scene from a suspense movie. And that’s no surprise, because this deliberately stylized Hollywood film-style persona is played by the artist herself. As a work of art, the image has a complexity that defies labeling as a self-portrait. Over a period of three years, Cindy Sherman created a series of more than 70 works in a similar manner.
The works are easy to characterize as questioning the predominant image of women as objects of the male gaze. But Sherman has steered away from obviously emotive imagery; rather, she has imbued each work with such ambiguity that viewers will find in them myriad stories. They all possess an inexorable will to evade simplistic interpretation.
