The work, which is distinguished by its vivid combination of colors, is titled Laguna, meaning "lagoon" in Italian. For artist Ohira Yoichi, the title is a reference to the lagoons of Venice, the "floating city" of the Adriatic, where he worked for 37 years from 1973. Perhaps the combination of colors expresses the city’s alleys and lagoons, sea and sun, woven together with light and shade. The work is made using traditional mosaic techniques. Glass rods of different colors are sliced and arranged, then covered with glass powder to form a mass that is later shaped using a blowpipe. Wave-like irregularities are also added to the surface. Several craftsmen collaborated to create this piece under Ohira’s direction.
