This work is by Wilhelm Von Gloeden, a photographer who was active in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century. Under the strong sunlight, Sicilian youths are seen relaxing in the Mediterranean landscape in the guise of figures from Greek mythology. The young men’s graceful poses and the subtle light effects are reminiscent of Greek and Roman classical art. Although never explicitly stated while Gloeden was alive, when homosexuality was considered a sin, his work later came to be interpreted as an expression of homosexuality.
