In this work Onchi Koshiro has used a unique technique called “multi-block,” in which thick paper, pieces of wood, strings and other items are rubbed on the paper instead of using printing blocks. The technique was a type of “non-carved print,” an attempt to overturn the assumption that woodblock prints must be made by carving blocks and then printing from those blocks. The difference in the textures of the items and the complex expressions and overlapping of color caused by moving them give the image rhythm. After World War II, Onchi explored abstract expression by working mainly on six series in parallel. Among them, the “Lyric” series was the most direct expression of the state of his heart. The abstract shapes and lines in this image seem to reflect the complex emotions of despair, anxiety and hope after the nation’s defeat in the war.
