This series of 19 works shows the city of Nagasaki, which was devastated by an atomic bomb during World War II. Objects depicted include partially destroyed buildings, crucifixes veiled in shadows, rain-washed streets, and quiet interiors. The mood of decay that permeates the images seems to suggest that time stopped at the instant the bomb was dropped. Harada Masamichi, who was based in Nagasaki and Fukuoka from the 1960s onwards, tried to capture the history engraved in the city as well as the memories of his fellow residents from a deeply personal perspective. Crucifixes and churches must have been a source of respite for Nagasaki’s residents. After this, Harada created other series, including Yokohama, featuring the city where he lived for about 10 years from 1986 until his later years, and Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery, featuring the famed Yokohama landmark where many who contributed to the modernization of Japan are buried.
