Fauns are the Roman spirits of forests and meadows, and they appear alone or in groups. Their upper body is that of a human while their lower body is that of a goat, and they have horns on their head.
Two young fauns are playing a game at the margins of the forest, locking horns under the noonday sun. The faun on the right grins at having taken the initiative by lunging faster than his adversary, while the faun on the left has his back hunched and is bracing his legs and flexing his biceps unconsciously, for use of his arms would be a foul. Their fellows stand in the shade or sit on a bank relaxing and watching the match.
Franz von Stuck was a leading painter in Munich at the end of the 19th century. He frequently took mythological and biblical motifs to create vibrant expressions of passion and joy. Early in his career, Stuck transferred one of his oil paintings to make this etching himself.
