A “gorge” generally refers to a large gap between two things. Here it appears to refer to a large hollow in the sand dunes, in which two young people can be seen. The woman is crouching hugging her knees, while the man looks down at her. During this period, Kokuryo Tsunero often sought to depict a sense of loneliness that he sensed in the young people participating in the student movement of the 1960s. This is not the loneliness of being alone, but of being in a group. In this work, perhaps the loneliness of the heart is expressed in the contrasts between the two melancholy figures and the shadowy sand dunes with a small patch of open blue sky.
