Born in Shandong Province, China, and based in Beijing, Chi Peng is known for photographic works created on a majestic scale using computer graphics. This work is part of a series the artist started in 2007 on the theme of the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. Depicted here is the scene in which the violent and irrepressible Sun Wukong is sealed under the Five Elements Mountain (made up of the five elements in ancient China: Fire, Water, Wood, Metal and Earth), which was formed by Buddha’s five upturned fingers. In this work, the five peaks of the mountain are represented by skyscrapers, and Sun Wukong is a modern-day human being captured in the city.
