Ono Yuzo is obsessed with the figure/ground relationship—that is, the relationship between his paint and the “support” it rests upon—and his art often involves the pursuit of unexpected forms and types of expression that emerge through that relationship. Since studying in Italy in 2003, he has used tempera paints on aluminum panels. However, this is an example of his earlier practice, which involved folding linen paper that had been coated with mineral pigments. When the paper is folded, the pigment peels off along the creases. By deliberately leaving the amount of peeling to chance and folding his paper repeatedly, he achieves works that are surprisingly gentle and delicate, born from the texture of the paper and the color variation along the creases. Each time the work is exhibited, the slight warping caused by the paper’s weight creates a subtly different appearance, adding to its charm.
