Uemae Chiyu is best known for having been a member of the Gutai Art Association, an avant-garde art group formed in 1954. He did not receive any formal art training, but made many unique artworks based on own life experiences, such as a dyeing and weaving apprenticeship and work as a crane operator. Until the dissolution of the Gutai Art Association in 1972, he produced mainly abstract paintings, but later expanded his oeuvre, sewing pieces of cloth together to make three-dimensional works after the 1970s and then making prints after the 1980. This is one of his earliest prints, and the original picture was created using readily available materials and tools such as sumi ink and a roller on paper. The image may reflect his experience working in a steel mill, which he liked to refer to as "The Magic City.”
