Yoshida Fujio studied painting from the age of 11, and when she was 16 she and her brother-in-law (who she later married), Yoshida Hiroshi, traveled to America together. The paintings the pair made during their travels were exhibited all over the United States and became popular. This work was made in the courtyard of the Ponce de Leon Hotel where they stayed in Florida. Originally opened as a hotel in the 19th century, this colorful building is still used as a university campus today. Hiroshi also painted the same building with a similar composition, but close comparison reveals differences between the two paintings. While Hiroshi painted the central entrance, with people gathering, Fujio seems to have chosen the wing of the building on the left. The painting highlights the activities of two siblings who devoted themselves to working overseas as well as the difference in their perspectives.
