Yokoo Tadanori has made many paintings on the theme of “Y-junctions,” where roads fork into two in the shape of a Y. This painting is one of the 16 Black Y-Junction works that were exhibited at Yokohama Triennale 2011. In the brightly colored works in the series Yokoo depicts the invisible world to make it visible, while in these “black” works, he has tried to make things that usually are visible disappear into darkness. This painting shows a view of Yokohama Museum of Art from the west, though with the building’s left and right wings shaped like a Y, with each appearing to recede into the distance. Fruits and bottles are also included, so it resembles a still life of objects on a table. One can’t help wondering what might lie in the darkness beyond the museum.
