Kumai Kyoko, who once said she wanted to make her work “cloth that is filled with the wind,” focused on stainless steel in the second half of the 1970s. Later, she started using steel wire exclusively, and this is one of those works, in which the intertwined metal wires shimmer like a grassy meadow in the breeze.
“The regular arrangement of thin lines and the beautiful curves remind us of the formation of cells in living organisms,” says Kumai. This same world view also comes through in the Japanese title of the work, the two characters of which mean “prosperity” and “generation” respectively. Deploying wire, an industrial material with strength and flexibility, to make organic forms poses the question of what textile (weaving and knitting) is, and introduces a new idea into this art field.
