Andromeda is a beautiful Ethiopian princess who appears in Greek mythology. When Andromeda’s mother boasts that Andromeda’s beauty surpasses that of even Poseidon’s granddaughter, the God of the Sea rages in anger. He sends a whale monster to Ethiopia, which causes many disasters. In order to appease Poseidon and save her country, Andromeda decides to sacrifice herself. Here she is depicted tied to a rock by the sea preparing to be sacrificed. After it was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1887, the painting was shown in Japan in 1925 under the title Standing Young Woman. At a time when many Japanese knew French paintings only through reproductions, the exhibition provided a rare opportunity to see genuine works.
