Sekijima Hisako creates works using the basket-weaving technique, using the barks, leaves, stems, and branches of plants and trees collected locally. She weaves and braids the materials into a range of shapes. Sekijima classifies the basic act of "weaving" into six types: entwine, tie, wind, braid, interlace, and twist. For this work, she has repeatedly "tied" kudzu vines to create three squares of different sizes. Working with non-standardized natural materials is never easy; the material will not always bend in the direction you want. She says learning to accept this limitation helped her deconstruct her own preconceived notions of form.
