A work of basketry made from flexible black bamboo fibers. Basketry is a method of braiding and weaving tree bark and vines to make baskets. This piece has a rectangular exterior with rounded corners, and a hole that penetrates through the interior. By cleverly using the front and back sides of black and white bamboo, and using the white side on the inside of the three-dimensional structure, a sense of spaciousness expanding outwards from within is created. The artist says that one of the charms of basket weaving is that there is a "gap" in the structure created by the interlaced strands. Having space enclosed within and being able to see through the structure are other important elements of Sekijima Hisako’s creations.
