In 1945 the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. It is believed that within four months more than 160,000 people had died as a result. This photograph was taken for a book called Living Hiroshima that was published by the Hiroshima Tourism Association Press two years after the bomb was dropped. It shows a destroyed gun battery at the site of Hiroshima Castle, with a man and woman talking beside it. At the time, Japan was still under the American Occupation. And yet, even still, some Japanese had started to try to convey the reality of the bomb and its aftermath. This photo is seeking to show that even in the remnants of a broken city, people are beginning to reestablish their lives.
