In November 1953, Emi Kinuko traveled for the first time to the United States and resided for a while in California. She moved to New York and then in the following spring to Paris, where she continued to work until she returned to Japan in August 1955. Depicted here is the Latin Quarter in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, as viewed from the 6th arrondissement, where she lived at the time. The domed roof on the left is the Sorbonne University Chapel, and the one on the right looks like the dome of the Pantheon. The signature written in Japanese in the bottom left corner is unique to this period. It suggests she was grappling with her identity in a foreign land as she went about her work in solitude.
