LP records and sewing needles are scattered in an abstract pattern. This photograph was taken by Hori Fusao, who studied in Germany before World War II with the support of his mentor Nojima Yasuzo. At the time in Germany, photographers of the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) movement seeking to capture the world in rational, objective, and realistic ways thrived against the backdrop of the Machine Age. After his return to Japan, Hori produced works influenced by these trends. In this photograph, which is typical of his output at the time, he has used a close-up technique. It shows the neatly carved grooves in the LP records, and the precisely manufactured needles. Focusing on details imperceptible to humans, Hori presents the world as it is visible to the mechanical eye.
