The surface of the river gradually sinks into a deep blue as the sun sets and night approaches. In addition to the sailor standing on the boat in the lower center of the image, we can also make out people walking on the bridge in the distance and a woman on the left bank holding hands with a child. Ishiwata Koitsu studied under Kawase Hasui, who painted landscapes throughout Japan, and from 1931 to 1932 he produced a series of woodblock prints in Yokohama, including the area around Koyasumachi in Kanagawa ward, Yokohama City, where he lived at the time. This is one of those works. Another depicts the same scene after sunset. Ishiwata was probably trying to capture the atmosphere of life in Yokohama—be it on the bridge, in the town or on a boat—and how it changed from dusk to night.
