This ceramic hanging ornament shows a duck descending with its wings outstretched. The plump body of the duck and the overlapping feathers are sculpted in three dimensions. Ko-Kiyomizu (old Kiyomizu) ware is a general term for a type of pottery that descends from the colored pottery of Nonomura Ninsei, who was active in Kyoto in the 17th century. In this work, red, gold, indigo and green are applied on top of a warm base, in the style of Ko-Kiyomizu. Miyagawa Kozan’s father, Chozo, was the 9th generation in a family of raku ware makers. He learned pottery-making from fellow Kyoto-resident Aoki Mokubei and was good at making tea bowls in the style of Ninsei. This work was created in Kozan’s later years. It uniquely combines his own roots making pottery in Kyoto under his father and the three-dimensional work that he excelled at.
