In November 1932, 19-year-old Hungarian Endre Friedmann (later Robert Capa), who worked as a darkroom assistant at a news agency in Berlin, was ordered to cover a lecture by the Soviet politician Leon Trotsky in Copenhagen. At the venue, Friedman closely observed the gesticulating speaker on stage, and took 29 vivid shots. The photographs, which were published in a major German magazine, represented his debut as a news photographer.
This is the 26th of the 29 photographs, and probably the most famous. Three years later Friedmann assumed the working name “Robert Capa.”
