After the Allied forces landed in Normandy on June 6, 1944, France was liberated from German occupation. With the arrival of peace came punishment for those citizens who had cooperated with the Germans. As is shown in this photo, local women associated with German soldiers had their hair shaved and were paraded around the town. A police officer stares menacingly at this woman, whose eyes are fixed on her child. A mocking crowd surrounds her. You might wonder how people could be so cruel. And yet when you consider how the once-strong might have treated the once-weak, you are reminded of the reality that it is often difficult to judge absolute "right" from absolute "evil." No matter how much we wish for it, feelings of hatred and discrimination are never eliminated, and this historical record conveys the pain and sorrow that can come with being human.
