In April 1954, while photographer Robert Capa was residing in Japan, he received a request from Life magazine to cover the Indochina War (a war of independence fought in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos against France). Having quickly wrapped up his work in Japan and flown to Vietnam, on May 25, shortly after 3 p.m., he stepped on a landmine and died. This photograph of French soldiers retreating after their position had been overrun was taken shortly before his death.
The thin black line along the edge of the negative, which is visible in this print, indicates that there is no next frame. Capa’s close friend John G. Morris decided the shot should be distributed in this way so the world would know it was Capa’s "last shot."
